We’ve made a lot of improvements to our Bootcamp program over the years, but today we’re announcing one of our biggest and best yet!
But first, here’s a little bit of HackerYou history.
We kicked off the very first cohort of our Web Development Immersive program on January 27, 2014. We had just moved into our space at 483 Queen West, and the renovation had gone over-time and over-budget (surprise, surprise). Since the lights in the classrooms hadn’t be installed yet, we ran the first week of classes in the lounge area. Wes Bos and Brenna O’Brien were at the front of the room with an audience of twenty-five students ready to work their butts off. They had no idea what they were in for. Neither did I.
Fast forward five years and Cohort 19 are in their final weeks of bootcamp. Somewhere in there, our 7000 square foot space became 12,000. Our team grew to 18 full-time staff, plus dozens of part-time instructors and mentors. HackerYou became a registered Private Career College and our Bootcamp became a registered vocational program. We updated our curriculum, replacing WordPress with React. We squished three weeks of HTML & CSS learning into two and a half to make room for more advanced concepts. We evolved our projects and exercises with every cohort to keep them relevant and reflective of ever-changing industry standards. We stopped accepting students on a rolling basis and switched to a selective Group Interview format. There’s no doubt in my mind that our Bootcamp is the highest quality program of its kind, run by a team that cares more than anyone out there.
And still, the innovation continues. The fun thing about running four cohorts a year is that you get to experiment. Each time we make a few small tweaks and then learn from the results. Did our changes make students happier? Did they make students more placeable? Did they make things more efficient? We’re experimenting constantly to determine which improvements make the biggest difference for our students in their quests to change their careers and their lives.
Today, I’m excited to announce one of our most exciting improvements to date.
Starting with Cohort 21 (which kicks off January 21st, 2019), we’re adding a mandatory part-time course to our Bootcamp. Beyond Bootcamp will begin two weeks after each bootcamp ends and run for six weeks. Students graduating from our Bootcamp program will be automatically enrolled and expected to attend evening classes twice a week, along with the rest of their cohort-mates.
Led by the incredibly talented developer & instructor Simon Bloom, this part-time course will review some of the more complex concepts from our Bootcamp program and teach students the things they need to learn next. Simon is currently a Web Application Developer at The Working Group and teaches our Part-Time Full-Stack Masterclass. He was also a graduate of Cohort 3 of our Web Development Immersive Bootcamp, and was part of the HackerYou Bootcamp Instructor team from 2016 to 2017. This makes him exceptionally qualified to develop and deliver content meant specifically to help our bootcamp students level up even more.
This course will also help students level up, solidifying already-learned concepts, and introducing new ones like:
- The type system
- Array methods
- The ‘this’ keyword
- Pass by reference vs. pass by value
- The return keyword
- Scope and closures
- Prototypal Inheritance and classes
- Introduction to functional programming
- Es6 language features
- ...and more!
Because of so many recent improvements we’ve made to our processes, our curriculum, new hires, and the addition of this part-time course, the price of our Bootcamp program will be increasing from $10,000 to $12,000 starting with our Winter 2019 Cohort. As always, there is no HST on bootcamp tuition and you’ll receive a tax receipt by February 28th of the following year. We’re confident that adding a 36-hour part-time course to the end of the Bootcamp, designed specifically for our grads, is going to make them even more successful. We know it will have a massive impact on the happiness of our students and alumni, and also ensure that our grads achieve their goals of switching careers and changing their lives in the most efficient, effective and fun way possible!
